Noble Character Creation

This is a walk-thru for character creation for a Westerosi Noble concept. In an effort to make the creation process as easy as possible, we provide nearly everything in copy and paste formats to take from the wiki here, into the game. Please make sure that the character is in the right room in the creation in the game.

Title

Every noble has a title of some kind. Typically it is either Lord or Lady, even noble children are called Lord or Lady. Then there are the royal titles of Prince, Princess, King or Queen. Princes, Princesses, Queens, and Kings are not open for creation. If they are playable characters they can be found on the +Roster. Knights have the title of Ser. There are other titles that come with certain occupations. Such as Lord Commander of a city watch or guard. The title of Warden of the <Direction> is reserved for certain Heads of Great Houses.

In the game, type one of the following:

+title Page
+title Squire
+title Ser
+title Lord
+title Lady
+title Lord Commander
+title Warden of the <Direction>

Name

Most Westerosi names are Saxon-originated (or passably so) English names with one or two consonant sound substitutions, ("Edward" to "Eddard") or a vowel shift ("Jeffrey" to "Joffrey") and it is preferred that this pattern is used to construct names.

Surnames are always the house name the character was born or married into. No new/original Houses are allowed on OldtownMU as there are plenty of unexplored and bare Houses that need fleshing out. Please consult the Regions pages for the Houses available in each region. It is staff preference that Reach Houses are considered first, there are also incentives as well in playing a Reach House.

Region Surname
Crownlands Waters
Dorne San
Iron Islands Pyke
North Snow
Reach Flowers
Riverlands Rivers
Stormlands Storm
Vale of Arryn Stone
Westerlands Hill
Bastard Surnames

That is unless the character is a Bastard. Their surname depends on the region in which they are born. It is based on the mother's origin region. For example, a certain Baratheon with an unsatiable lust begets bastards on smallfolk and noblewomen alike all over Westeros, those bastards will still be named for each individual region they are born and not all named Storm because the father was from the Stormlands. There are cases that are different from this normal practice, but this is the norm. These naming practices are for noble blood bastards only. See the smallfolk walk-thru for non-noble bastard naming practices.

For the character's name, (Replacing the <>s and NAME and SURNAME with character's first name and surname) in the game, type:

+name <NAME> <SURNAME>

Fealty

This entry covers the Westerosi Region that the character originated from or that which they've sworn fealty towards. It is preferred that characters be from The Reach. As it lends an ease to the reasoning for being in Oldtown. But Oldtown was selected as the setting for its hub of activity and diverse metropolitan ways. So nobles of all regions but Dorne are welcomed. Please speak with staff if you wish to play a Dornishman.

Please explore the dedicated pages to each of the regions for deeper details on the who's, whats and where.

In the game, type one of the following:

+fealty The Reach
+fealty The Crownlands
+fealty Dorne
+fealty The Iron Islands
+fealty The North
+fealty The Riverlands
+fealty The Stormlands
+fealty The Vale
+fealty The Westerlands

Faction

Faction covers which noble household the character is a member. This usually is just the same as the character's surname.

But for instances such as hostages, guards, ladies in waiting, or Master of for a House they would, in fact, be in the faction of that House in which they closely serve.

For example, Theon Greyjoy at the beginning of his story and Ser Rodrik Cassel, the Castellan for House Stark would both have the Faction of: House Stark.

In the game (Replacing the <>s and HOUSENAME with character's Faction), type:

+faction House <HOUSENAME>

Status Rank

There are many ranks in the noble hierarchy. Each House is assigned with a Status Rank, this automatically gives nearly all members of that family the same ranking. Exiles and Outcasts however obviously don't share their families standing. If a Lord is also a Knight, please use the Knight version of that status.

  • Hedge Knight: Hedge Knights have no lord and wander; they tend to be poor and serve anyone who will feed and shelter them.
  • Landed Knight: Knights may be granted lands and keeps (and are thus known as landed knights Knights normally swear their service to a particular lord and do their part to keep his peace and enforce his rule.
  • Greater Landed Knights: If a landed knight becomes very successful he can be considered a Greater Landed Knight. But even the greatest and richest knights have less legal authority than the smallest of lords, however.
  • Minor Noble Lady/Lord/Knight: Lesser or Minor nobles have the smallest amount of status in the hierarchy, they are only above the non-noble Knights when it comes to clout in court and noble matters. They are petty lords at the bottom, entrusted with only a village or so. It is the Lord's responsibility to see to the affairs of his lands, keep the King's peace, judge on local matters, and ensure that taxes due to the king are collected in a timely manner.
  • Major Noble Lady/Lord/Knight: Major Houses and the lords and ladies of them are entrusted with large areas of regions and have minor houses under their governance. It is the Liege Lord's responsibility to see to the affairs of his lands, keep the King's peace, judge on local matters, and ensure that taxes due to the king are collected in a timely manner. For a local, Oldtown MUSH, example: House Hightower is a Major house that rules over Oldtown City and much of the surrounding lands. Their Vassal Houses are House Beesbury of Honeyholt, House Bulwer of Blackcrown, House Costayne of the Three Towers, House Cuy of Sunhouse, and House Mullendore of Uplands.
  • Great Noble Lady/Lord/Knight: The lords of the great house are at the top of the societal order, holding dominion over one of the nine regions of the seven kingdoms, second only to the king. It is the Lord's responsibility to see to the affairs of his lands, keep the King's peace, judge on local matters, and ensure that taxes due to the king are collected in a timely manner. Great Families are NPC or Roster only.
  • Princess: Any girl born or adopted into House Targaryen, or House Martell. This rank are NPC or Roster only.
  • Prince: Any boy born or adopted into House Targaryen, or House Martell. This rank are NPC or Roster only.
  • Queen: The female ruler of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. This rank is NPC only.
  • King: The male ruler of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. This rank is NPC only.

Occupation

The following list is noble appropriate occupations. A general rule to keep in mind is beside fighting and hunting anything really laborious is more often than not left to the smallfolk. Also an important note for female nobles, this theme in the way of occupation is very man heavy. It's based on the medieval principles that a noblewoman is a delicate thing that manages a household, does needlework, reads the romantic stories, maybe plays an instrument and manages the children. The Briennes and Aryas of the world are an extremely rare thing and Staff will be keeping this in mind during approval. Noblewoman appropriate occupations are in Purple.
