The Reach is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. It was formerly a sovereign nation ruled by the Kings of the Reach before the War of Conquest. It is the second-largest of the kingdoms behind the north and is considered the most fertile and heavily-populated part of Westeros.

The Reach is considered the home of chivalry in Westeros. It is the place where knighthood is looked upon with the greatest reverence and esteemed the most. It is also the place where the rules for tournaments are the most stringent and managed.

It is the most fertile part of Westeros and has numerous and well-populated villages and towns. The Sunset Sea is found to the west, while the hills of the Westerlands are to the northwest and the Blackwater Rush of the Riverlands is to the north. The Reach borders the Crownlands to the northeast, while to the east and southeast are the Stormlands and their Dornish Marches. The furthest southeast of the Reach is the Red Mountains of Dorne and the Summer Sea. The Roseroad links Oldtown with King's Landing by way of Highgarden, while the Ocean Road links Highgarden with Lannisport.

The Reach is watered by the immense river Mander and its tributaries, including the Blueburn and the Cockleswhent. The Reach proper is centered around the Mander. Oldtown is located at the mouth of the Honeywine River. The region also has several islands, including the Shield Islands near the mouth of the Mander and the Arbor south of the Whispering Sound and the Redwyne Straits.

Locations of Importance

  • The Arbor: Lying off the southeastern corner of the Reach is the Arbor, an island known throughout Westeros, even in some places across the narrow sea—for the quality of the wine made there. Of these, there are several vintages of note, from dry fruity reds to rich whites—the most famed of the latter is known as Arbor Gold. The Arbor is the seat of House Redwyne, one of the more powerful families within the Reach. Since water separates them from the rest of the continent, the current Lord of the Arbor, has ensured there are plenty of ships on hand to transport the labor of their fruits as well as to defend the island should the need arise. The Arbor fleet comprises a significant portion of the Tyrell’s sea strength; in fact, the only fleets of comparable size are the royal fleet and the ships of the Iron Islands. The main harbor for the island, and the point from which the various Arbor vintages are distributed, can be found in the town of Ryamsport. Two of the other towns of note on the island are Vinetown and Starfish Harbor. There are also other, smaller islands littered throughout the Redwyne Straits separating the Arbor from the rest of the continent. Among these are Bastard’s Cradle, Horseshoe Rock, the Isle of Pigs, Mermaid’s Palace, and Stonecrab Cay.
  • Ashford: Ashford is the seat of House Ashford. Ashford is a market town divided into two parts by the Cockleswent River. The town proper is on one side of the river, where it falls under the protection of Ashford Castle. The castle is in the shape of a triangle, built of stout walls topped with crenellations and towers some thirty feet tall at each point. Across the Cockleswent is Ashford Meadow a sprawling area perfect for tourneys to be held.
  • Bitterbridge: Bitterbridge, formerly known as Stonebridge, is the seat of House Caswell.
  • Blackcrown: Blackcrown is the seat of House Bulwer in southwestern Reach. It is located on the northern shore of Whispering Sound near Oldtown and Three Towers.
  • Brightwater Keep: Brightwater Keep is the seat of House Florent. It sits near the source of the Honeywine, north of Honeyholt, east of Bandallon, and southwest of the Mander.
  • Cider Hall: Cider Hall is the seat of House Fossoway. It is located near the confluence of the Cockleswhent and the Mander.
  • Goldengrove: Goldengrove is the seat of House Rowan. It is located east of Red Lake in the northern portion of the Reach. Goldengrove is situated along a river which flows from the hills near Silverhill south to Highgarden.
  • Grassy Vale: Grassy Vale is a town controlled by House Meadows who live in near-by Grassfield Keep. It sits along the northern shore of the Blueburn river, close to the border with the Stormlands.
  • Highgarden: The capital of the Reach. Highgarden Castle is the seat of House Tyrell and the point from which all power in the region radiates. The castle itself presents a striking scene, standing over the Mander and surrounded by fields sprouting the house’s signature golden roses. It is an oft-repeated motif, as many of the members of the castle staff have the golden rose sewn onto the right breast of their clothes. The household guard is even more richly ornamented, with gilded half-helms and cloaks of green edged in gold satin to go along with the blooming rose. In addition to the abundance of the house flower, Highgarden boasts gardens and courtyards rich with still more blossoms, groves, and flowering trees. Music frequently fills the castle grounds as the Tyrells keep many musicians at court, including fiddlers, harpers, and pipers.
  • Longtable: Longtable is the seat of House Merryweather. It sits along the Mander near its confluence with the Blueburn.
  • Oldtown: Oldtown is one of the largest and oldest cities in Westeros, built by the First Men before the Andal invasion. Oldtown was constructed around the Hightower, the seat of House Hightower in the center of the city. Oldtown is home to the Citadel and houses the Starry Sept, the seat of the High Septon of the Faith of the Seven.
  • Old Oak: Old Oak is the seat of House Oakheart. It is located in the west of the Reach near the Sunset Sea, along the Ocean Road which links Highgarden and Lannisport.
  • Shield Islands: The Shield Islands, commonly called the Shields or Four Shields', are four islands that are located in the Sunset Sea west of Highgarden and protect the Mander River. The islands before the wars were ruled by four different houses. Ever since King Euron Greyjoy laid waste to the islands on his way to King's Landing things have changed a great deal. All of the islands are now ruled by House Hewett.
    • Greenshield Island, once ruled by House Chester, is the northernmost island in the Shield Island network. Being the island that was the first to be reached by the Greyjoys in the Battle of the Shield Islands, it received the brunt of the attack for the longest duration. The castle was raided and the entire family was put to the sword.
    • Greyshield Island, once ruled by House Grimm is now an inhabitable ruin devoid of life, just a hunk of grey rock, its ruling family extinct. Former Lord Guthor Grimm surrendered the island and his castle, Grimston to the Ironborn at the advice of his Septon. He was kept in the dungeon until he was rescued. In such a broken mental state he challenged his rescuer to a duel but collapsed and died before it could be fought.
    • Southshield, aptly the southernmost island in the Shield Island network. Once ruled by House Serry is also an ugly ruin and the only survivor of the bloodline has taken sanctuary in Oldtown.
    • Oakenshield Island, ruled by House Hewett is the easternmost island so it survived and the Battle of Sheild Islands. It was used by the Ironborn as their launching point for further raiding along the coasts until they finally reached King's Landing. The Hewett's suffered a great deal but they are now the rulers of all of the Shield Islands.
  • Three Towers: Three Towers is the seat of House Costayne. It sits on a cliff on the southern shore of Whispering Sound, almost where the sound meets the Redwyne Straits.

The region more than any other of Westeros is a rather stark contrast between nobles and smallfolk. The status divide is strong, but some of the most charismatic nobles come from the Reach. Their talents honed in placating and befriending the poor farmer and other smallfolk. Yes, their life is hard, but the nobles reward them with plenty of platitudes or more genuine praises depending on the noble and situation. Many noble families are very generous with their smallfolk and the tradition has economic benefits as well and so it is common practice.

The Reach is very much tied to nature and growth, wardrobes are typically browns, greens, and floral patterns. Features commonly found in the region is rich soil black or brown hair that varies to a lightened straw or hay color the closer to the Westerlands the area gets. The only region The Reach does not border with is the North, so along these borders, there is, of course, a greater variety in complexion, hair, and eyes. The difference in the social divide also shows itself in the builds and physiques between nobles and smallfolk, brawny are the soldiers and the farmers and ranchers, while lithe and pampered are the nobles. Noble bastards born in the Reach are given the surname Flowers.

In recent history with the War of the Five Kings, and the Winter of Night's Death, and the failed conquering of the Mother of Dragons, and the Destruction of the Iron Throne, things have been shaken up a great deal. The extinction of the once Great House Tyrell and the subsequent bouncing around of The Reach's leadership until it settling on Bronn of the Blackwater being given Highgarden for all of his help to the current King and Council. As House Bronn is for now just a single person who lives far from Highgarden, in King's Landing, and is the Master of Coin for the King it really has fallen to two of the major houses of the Reach to govern and rule. Unofficially the Reach is divided into two, everything north of Highgarden is under House Rowan while everything to the South of the capital is governed by House Hightower. Together they work in tandem and thus far with the help of their vassal houses, things have gone very smoothly and the Reach is prospering.

Bronn's house of Highgarden is a newly formed Great House of Westeros. It rules over the Reach, a vast, fertile, and heavily-populated region of southwestern Westeros, from their castle-seat of Highgarden as Lords Paramount of the Reach after taking control of the region from House Tyrell, following their extinction as a result of the destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor and the Sack of Highgarden.

The house was founded by Ser Bronn of the Blackwater and raised to power as the fulfillment of a debt owed by Tyrion of House Lannister, the Hand of the King to the first elected king, Brandon I Stark. The sigil of the house is a flaming arrow, symbolizing Bronn's role during the Battle of the Blackwater.

Hightower

The Hightower of Oldtown is the central point from which the rest of the city grew, and serves as both a beacon to incoming ships and as the ancestral seat to House Hightower. The family is as old and proud as the building they live in, dating all the way back to the time of the First Men. The Hightowers were kings in their own right, but they eventually chose to bend the knee to the Kings of the Reach rather than battle for supremacy. This is not unusual for the house, as they generally prefer to deal in trade goods instead of cold steel, and pledging fealty to the lords of the Reach has not prevented them from continuing their commerce.

In addition to being instrumental in making Oldtown a center of trade, the Hightowers were also responsible for making the city known for its learning and religious tolerance, for it was due to their initiative that the Citadel was established and the Starry Sept and numerous smaller temples to other faiths were allowed to flourish. Since they are known for eschewing combat, it is little surprise the Hightowers are themselves enamored of both learning and the Faith, though there have been plenty of family members who have dabbled in the knightly arts. Rumor also has it that some Hightowers have dabbled in alchemy and necromancy.

During the War of the Usurper otherwise known as Robert's Rebellion, House Hightower remained loyalists to the Crown and House Targaryen. This is a major reason for Oldtown being targetted by the Ironborn, for Queen Cersei feared they would side with Queen Daenerys.

The Oldman of Oldtown, Leyton Hightower is very elderly and he has passed on his rule to his sons, of which he has four and being that he has great admiration for the occult and the elements he has a saying:

"To each son, I have given an element
Fire, the beacon, the Hightower that lights the way goes to my heir, Baelor.
Earth, the land and the those that war upon it, the training of the infantry of Oldtown goes to, Garth.
Water, the seas that protect Oldtown and bring it such wealth, all things naval go to Gunthor.
Air, words are wind and the art of diplomacy goes to Humfrey."

Lord Arthur Ambrose is the Head of House along with his Hightower Wife, Alysanne and their son, Alyn, House Ambrose is known as fair and protective of their smallfolk and not afraid of a fight. Blackcrown Castle and Three Towers serve as the watchtowers of Whispering Sound, with Blackcrown located on the northern shore. The sigil of House Bulwer is the bull, bone on blood. It is not a pretty flower, or apple, or bee. It is a symbol of their strength and the length they will go to in pursuance of their duty. Their words, "Death Before Disgrace", is another stark reminder of this. The men of the house are, down to the last, meant to be knights and warriors whose swords are destined to smite their enemies and those of the Hightowers, and their shields are for the protection of their house and their liege, rather than themselves. As for the women born into this house, theirs is the traditional role of noblewomen in Westeros - it is their duty to marry well and secure alliances so that House Bulwer will always have friends both in peace and war. It has always been a point of pride that among Bulwer women, there are none willing to abandon this duty, for though they do not take up blade and shield in defense of their House and that of House Hightower, theirs is still a solemn role that is just as important and must not be shirked for any foolish notions of love or selfishness.

The current head of House Bulwer is Harrian Bulwer. Originally Harrian was the youngest son of a cadet branch, but when Jon Bulwer died of a summer sickness in 290 the Head of House became his young daughter Alysanne with her mother Victaria as her regent. Victaria was a Tyrell by birth and like many of the family, she traveled with Alysanne to the Trails of Margaery and Loras in King's Landing. They were both murdered in the wildfire explosion of the Great Sept of Baelor. Leaving Harrian as Head of House because his older brother was also murdered by a Braavosi Waterdancer in 272. He adopted his brother's children as his own and they all live in Blackcrown doing their best to avenge their shames and loses.

House Cuy of Sunflower Hall is a minor noble house sworn to the Hightowers. Being one of the original five vassal houses lends the minor house some seniority in the local political network and courtly affairs. Their sigil is a blazon of six yellow sunflowers on blue. In the War of the Five Kings Lord Branston Cuy supported Renly Baratheon and upon his assassination followed the Tyrells into their alliance with the Lannisters. Ser "Emmon the Yellow" Cuy was even one of the Rainbow Guard to King Renly but was killed by the King's assassin when she was discovered. After all the centuries of working towards politically positioning themselves to displace the Tyrell's and put themselves in Highgarden it is a strange time for House Florent. Just like the first Tyrells did, an outsider with no claim to the Reach has been put into the seat of power the Florents believe belong to them. But much like the rest of Westeros the Florents are tired of war and rebellion so they continue to do what they are best at; waiting for the right time to make the final move.

The cluster of wars over the last generation or two rocked the House to its foundation and took some of the more prominent members to meet the Seven, or in some cases R'hllor. Because Stannis Baratheon's wife was a Florent, many of the family sided with Stannis in the War of the Five Kings and not Renly like most of the Reach. Their choice proved fatal when not one but two of the Heads of House were sacrificed and burned to death to Stannis and his wife's new god, R'hllor, for treason and heresy.

Attainted by the crown when worn by Cersei Lannister they lost their seat at Brightwater Keep. It was given to House Hightower when their lands were expanded at the end of everything. While his father and uncle were off following Stannis, Lord Alekyne Florent remained in the Reach at Oldtown, guest of the Hightowers to remain in their good graces with the hope of being awarded Brightwater once more when the dust has finally settled.

House Redwyne of the Arbor is one of the main noble houses sworn to Hightower. Their seat is the Arbor, an island located off the southwestern-most part of Westeros, best known for making the most favoured wines in Westeros. The Redwynes control the Redwyne fleet, the largest fleet in Westeros, containing two hundred warships and five times as many merchant carracks, wine cogs, trading galleys, and whalers.

The sigil of House Redwyne is a burgundy grape cluster on blue, symbolizing the famed wines of the Arbor. Members of the house tend to be freckled and red of hair. The Redwynes claim descent from Gilbert of the Vines, a legendary son of Garth Greenhand. House Redwyne ruled over the Arbor as Kings of the Arbor until its last king was lost at sea, allowing his cousin, King Meryn III Gardener, to make the isle part of the Kingdom of the Reach. During the War of the Usurper otherwise known as Robert's Rebellion, House Redwyne remained loyalists to the Crown and House Targaryen.

Fleets from the Arbor and Oldtown protected the Reach from naval attacks during the Andal invasion and more recently against the Ironborn as they reaved along the coast of Westeros until they reached King's Landing so their King Euron could propose to Queen Cersei. Lady Olenna Tyrell, was aunt to Lord Paxter Redwyne and mother of his wife, Mina Tyrell, so House Redwyne very much backed the Queen of Thorn's rebellion against Queen Cersei and still hold quite the grudge against the Lannisters and the Westerlands for their invasion of Highgarden and murder by poisoning of Olenna and the remaining Tyrells. This grudge also extends to the Houses of the Reach that joined the enemy, like the Tarly's.

House Caswell of Bitterbridge is a noble house from the Reach. Their seat is Bitterbridge, where the Roseroad meets the river, Mander. It is a relatively modest affair, made of stone and timber and barely tall enough to be called a tower. Its great hall is called that more out of courtesy than as a true measure of its stature. Their blazon is a yellow centaur wielding a bow on a white field. The Caswells carry the title Defender of the Fords.

Some history of the House is during the Faith Militant Uprising in 42 there was a battle between King Maegor the Cruel's forces and the Poor Fellows. While crossing the Mander, the Poor Fellows were caught between six lordly armies supporting Maegor. With the army of Poor Fellows divided by the river, they were cut to pieces. The sheer brutality of the carnage made the Mander run red with blood for twenty leagues, resulting in the bridge and castle that commanded it forever after being known as Bitterbridge. Also, during the era of the Dance of the Dragons circa 130, Tom Flowers, the Bastard of Bitterbridge, was one of the commanders of the Blacks.

In modern times, House Caswell faces some stern speculation and is not trusted because of Lord Lorent Caswell's tendency to lock him and his family up in their castle the moment things look shaky with the politics he backs. Marked a craven by most, it is often said about him, that he is so surrounded by women (wife, two daughters, and four sisters), he became a woman himself.

They blazon their arms with an oaken escutcheon studded with iron, a field bendy of undulating blue and white. The Shield Islands are a considerable sea strength and were the first line of defense when the Ironborn pirates try to sail up the Mander to sack the wealth of the Reach.

The Head of House, Lord Humfrey Hewett, was reported dead after the siege, but a week after was found barely alive in Oakenshield's dungeon. He is stable now and is doing better every day. The only continuous trouble and shame that House Hewett faces now are the numerous "Flowers" that were put in Lord Hewett's many daughter's and granddaughter's bellies during the siege.

Falia Flowers, Humfrey's Bastard daughter who felt she was always mistreated by her step-mother and step-sisters suggested to her new lover Euron that the women should serve the Ironborn naked as the raiders celebrated their victory in the great hall of Oakenshield Castle. Her father was bound and gagged in the chair next to where she sat on Euron's lap, watching the whole ordeal. When Euron left she stowed away on his ship to become his Salt Wife as he promised her. She was discovered and thrown overboard in the Redwyne Strait, though she survived, she dares not return to the Shield Islands and now lives in Oldtown with her own bastard baby.

The Oakhearts and Daynes have had a blood feud ever since. Their arms are three green oak leaves on gold. Their banner is thus referred to as the Three Leaves.

In the Sacking of Highgarden by Lannister forces most of the houses and holdings along the Ocean Road along the west coast of the reach were obliterated. Thanks to the quick action of giving all citizens of Old Oak and the surrounding town sanctuary within the seat of the house. House Serry rules over Southshield, the southernmost of the Shield Islands of the Reach. Their blazon is a white rose upon a red escutcheon upon white, within a red embattled border. The Shield Islands are a considerable sea strength and were the first line of defense when the Ironborn raiders try to sail up the Mander to sack the wealth of the Reach.

House Serry was lost in the Battle of the Shield Islands when Euron attacked. They lost any known members in the conflict.

The Tyrells have held dominion over the Reach since Aegon the Conqueror raised them up from their status of stewards after destroying the Gardener line at the Field of Fire. The Tyrells have proven to be just rulers, and the Reach has continued to prosper under their dominion. Of course, ruling over a region that was prosperous, to begin with, makes the task that much simpler, as some of the Reach’s other houses would likely point out.

House Tyrell of Highgarden is one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, overlords over the Reach. A large, wealthy house, its wealth is only surpassed among the Great Houses by House Lannister, and the Tyrells can field the greatest armies. Additionally, if they call the fleets of their bannermen the Redwynes, the lords of the Shield Islands, and the coastal lords, they can command a navy that equals if not surpasses the royal fleet.

The Lords of House Tyrell style themselves 'Defenders of the Marches' and 'High Marshals of the Reach', and traditionally, they have been Wardens of the South. Members of the family tend to have curly brown hair and brown or golden eyes.

Tyrell saw the loss of many of their members while King Joffrey and his successors reigned. Unlucky where they that many of their next in lines were killed in the Great Sept at the mercy of Wildfire. The rest were wiped out when the Lannisters sacked Highgarden and systematically killed them off.
