The Crownlands
Location Details
Address: The Crownlands
Coordinates: Mideast Westeros
Owner: House Targaryen
Type: Kingdom Region
Wealth: Destitute - Opulent

The Crownlands is one of the nine constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. It was never a sovereign nation, instead of being contested by River Kings, Storm Kings, and local petty kings until Aegon the Conqueror seized control of the area during his Wars of Conquest and made it his primary foothold on the continent. The capital city of King's Landing sprung up around King Aegon's original landing on the main continent, hence the name.

Locations of Importance

The Crownlands are based around Blackwater Bay, with the capital of King's Landing built where the Blackwater Rush meets the bay. King's Landing, the largest city in Westeros, contains the Red Keep, the home of House Targaryen of King's Landing. Settlements north of King's Landing include Antlers (seat of House Buckwell), Rosby (seat of House Rosby), Stokeworth (seat of House Stokeworth), and Duskendale (seat of House Rykker), the region's secondary port. Farther north are Rook's Rest (seat of House Staunton) and Crackclaw Point, a rugged peninsula of insular folk whose castles include the Dyre Den (seat of House Brune), Brownhollow (another seat of House Brune), and the Whispers (formerly of House Crabb). North of Crackclaw Point is the Bay of Crabs and the Vale of Arryn.

The Crownlands are bordered to the northwest and west by the Riverlands. A stream forms part of the boundary between the two regions, with the hills of House Wode in the Riverlands and the lands of House Hogg in the Crownlands. An unnamed river flows south from Gods Eye into the Blackwater Rush in the western crownlands. Southwest of King's Landing is hills around Tumbleton in the Reach.

South of King's Landing is the Kingswood, the royal hunting forest, and the Stormlands. The Wendwater flows through the Kingswood into the bay. East of the Kingswood is Massey's Hook, another peninsula that with Crackclaw Point forms the inlet of Blackwater Bay. Castles on Massey's Hook include Stonedance (seat of House Massey) and Sharp Point (seat of House Bar Emmon).

Islands within Blackwater Bay include Dragonstone (another seat of House Baratheon), Driftmark (seat of House Velaryon), and Claw Isle (seat of House Celtigar). Also sworn to the Baratheons of Dragonstone is Sweetport Sound (seat of House Sunglass). Massey's Hook is separated from Driftmark by the Gullet. East of Blackwater Bay is the narrow sea.

The Kingsroad connects King's Landing with Storm's End to the south and the crossroads to the north, while the capital is connected to Lannisport by the Goldroad and to Highgarden by the Roseroad. With the exception of Crackclaw Point, the land is largely flat. Lying in the middle portion of Westeros, the Crownlands possess a temperate climate.

  • King's Landing: The Capital City of the Crownlands and the entirety of Westeros. It was the site of where Aegon the Conqueror came to shore from across the narrow sea, hence the name: King's Landing. It is the seat of House Targaryen and is the most populous city in all Seven Kingdoms.
  • Dragonstone: Dragonstone has a long and varied history, beginning when the Targaryens first set foot in Westeros. As the ancestral home of the Targaryens and the place from which Aegon the Conqueror set forth to take control of Westeros, Dragonstone has always held an important place in the political and mental landscape of the Seven Kingdoms. Appropriately, Dragonstone is unlike any other structure in the Seven Kingdoms. Although it doesn’t sport as large a population as King’s Landing, isn’t as physically imposing as the Wall, and doesn’t command as many bannermen as other holdings, its perceived importance and unique construction make it stand out like nothing else.
  • Claw Isle: This small island stands off the coast of Crackclaw Point in the narrow sea. It is the seat of House Celtigar.
  • Driftmark: Driftmark is an island of considerable size, equal to that of Dragonstone. It is the ancestral seat of House Velaryon.
  • Massey’s Hook: This long peninsula is home to Stonedance, the ancestral castle, and holdings of House Massey.
  • Sharp Point: Sharp Point is the castle of House Bar Emmon. It stands at the end of the southern peninsula bounding Blackwater Bay.

The people of the Crownlands are a vast array of colors and allegiances. King's Landing, the central power of the Kingdom of Westeros resides within the region and bring with it a pilgrimage of many. It creates a melting point of both native Westerosi and foreigners. With a highly dense population, the diversity comes with a price. The region is tumultuous and crime is rampant in the city as well as the surrounding lands.

Merchants bring with them goods that can not be found elsewhere in the Kingdom. Along with the striking wealth of the nobility, there is a greater depth of poverty here as well. Many smallfolk go overlooked in such a densely populated area. The constant surge of activity means that the Crownlands are the place to be for a skilled craftsman, merchants and those that seek to climb the social ladder.

The Crownlands and all of Westeros (despite Dorne's thought to the contrary) is ruled by the Targaryen crown on the Iron Throne. Some notable houses of the Crownlands include Bar Emmon, Celtigar, Massey, Rosby, Rykker, Stokeworth, Sunglass, and Velaryon. Bastards of noble origin born and raised in the Crownlands are given the surname Waters.

House Targaryen

sigil_house-targaryen.png
Fire and Blood
Standing Wealth Lands Seat
Great House Opulent The Crownlands King's Landing

Their sigil is House Targaryen built and has ruled the Seven Kingdoms uninterrupted for over one hundred and twenty years, withstanding rebellions, plague, civil war, and the slow decline of the dragons with which they’d forged the empire. The Targaryens had always set themselves apart from the rest of the noble houses of Westeros, and Targaryen kings claimed to not only be Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, but also King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, as well as Protectors of the Realm. In addition, because they trace their origins to the Freehold of Valyria, they also claim to have the blood of dragons in their veins—a claim no other house can make. Given the legendary achievements of Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters, most ruling members of the house found it difficult, if not impossible, to live up to the name. In some cases, they would sit back and do very little to merit mention in the history of the realm, while in other cases they pursued a particular goal with monomaniacal glee.

In most instances, this vigorous approach worked for being remembered, but it wasn’t conducive to being regarded as a good ruler. Kings like Maegor the Cruel are all well known for their madness but not well loved. Because of their illustrious history, members of House Targaryen are prideful, even going so far as to place themselves above the laws of the gods. Nowhere was this clearer than in their practice of marrying blood to blood, like their Valyrian ancestors had. No doubt, this inbreeding served to reinforce the madness that naturally runs in their blood, and it is said every Targaryen is bound for either greatness or madness. King Viserys I Targaryen is the fifth Targaryen King. Before him was his grandfather, Jaehaerys I Targaryen. Jaehaerys' predecessor was earlier mentioned, Maegor I Targaryen aka Maegor the Cruel. Maegor took the crown from his older half-brother, Aenys I Targaryen, it is highly believed that Aenys was killed by his step-mother so that her son Maegor would have the crown. Then, of course, there is the king that started it all, Aegon I Targaryen.

The current king, Viserys I Targaryen is beloved by all and is renowned for his generosity and jolly kindness. Tournaments, festivals, and courtly parties are a frequent occurrence. Things in the Seven Kingdoms is prosperous and good, thanks to his reign.

Major Wealthy Duskendale Dun Fort

The Darklyns had been petty kings of the First Men during the Age of Heroes. Their closest allies were their bannermen of House Hollard, who served them loyally and provided brides three times for the Darklyn kings of old. The Darklyns claimed the mouth of the Blackwater Rush during the Hundred Kingdoms. The petty kings of Duskendale were once conquered by the Storm King Monfryd the Mighty.

During the Andal invasion, the Darklyns forced Togarion Bar Emmon to flee from the northern shore of the Blackwater to Massey's Hook. Even after their small realm was swallowed up by larger Andal kingdoms, the Darklyns' power sometimes reached as far as Crackclaw Point.

During Aegon's Conquest, Aegon I Targaryen and his bastard half-brother Orys Baratheon defeated the Darklyns of Duskendale and the Mootons of Maidenpool in Aegon's first test. The Darklyns bent the knee to the Targaryens and served their new kings as the proud Lords of Duskendale.

Their sigil is fusily black and gold, seven white escutcheons upon a red tierce. They are close allies to the dragonlords to the point that seven sons of Darklyn joined the Kingsguard, more than any other house, a fact which is referred to in the Darklyns' coat of arms. Ser Robin Darklyn was one of the first members of the order. Ser Steffon Darklyn is a member of the Kingsguard of King Viserys I Targaryen.

If the house possesses such wealth, it keeps it hidden from the rest of the world.

Claw Isle is located north of Dragonstone, just off Crackclaw Point. The Celtigars claim Crackclaw Point falls under their control, but the people there disagree because they were freed long ago from bending the knee to anyone but the Iron Throne for helping Visenya during the Wars of Conquest. Their sigil is red crabs strewn on white.
