Languages

Language Skills don’t have a rating. Each Language Skill costs 2 points to purchase. If you have a Language, it is assumed you are proficient in speaking, reading, and writing it. Illiteracy can be played if you so desire.

Languages are not coded. Simply role-play that you are speaking in another language, and expect other players to role-play understanding or not, as is appropriate.

Most people in Westeros know only the Common Tongue, and you'll need a good reason to know another language.

Westerosi Languages

  • Common Tongue - This is the language of Westeros, brought by the Andals. Everyone gets this language.
  • Old Tongue - This was the language of the First Men. It is nearly extinct, and only a rare Northerner might know it.

Valyrian Languages

Think of High Valyrian as being equivalent to classical Latin in our own world, while the Low Valyrian dialects are equivalent to Italian and Spanish.

  • High Valyrian - This is the language of Valyria. It is no longer commonly spoken, and in Westeros is treated as the language of learning and poetry.
  • Low Valyrian - Low Valyrian is not a language of its own. You may take this 'language' when you take any of the following Low Valyrian dialects. It indicates that you can understand, and make yourself understood, in all of them.
    • Braavosi - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Braavos.
    • Lorathi - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Lorath.
    • Lysene - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Lys.
    • Myrish - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Myr.
    • Norvosi - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Norvos.
    • Pentoshi - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Pentos.
    • Qohorik - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Qohor.
    • Tyroshi - The Low Valyrian dialect of the Free City of Tyrosh.
